Saw palmetto is the best-selling prostate ingredient in America. It has also been through two large randomised trials, CAMUS and STEP, and in both it did no better than placebo, including on night-time urination. Pygeum africanum was reviewed by Cochrane across 18 trials and 1,562 men: nocturia was 19% lower than placebo. Saw palmetto is still in this formula at 300 mg. It was never the problem. It just was not enough on its own.
How much pygeum is a real doseadd
The human trials used 75 to 200 mg a day. This is 200 mg, the top of that range. Dose is where most prostate supplements quietly fall short, which is why the number is on the front of the bottle instead of buried on the back.
What does standardized to 3% phytosterols meanadd
Phytosterols are the fraction of the bark the research measured. Standardizing to 3% means each batch is assayed to contain that fraction, rather than being milled bark that may contain almost none of it. Most labels do not print this figure. It is the fastest way to tell a real extract from a powder.

Will this stop me getting up at night?add
Yes it should. Cochrane pooled 18 trials and 1,562 men and found pygeum reduced night-time urination by 19% against placebo. That is a real, measured difference and it is also an average - for a man making three trips it is closer to losing one than losing all of them. Anyone promising you a dry night is selling you something nobody has measured.
I already take saw palmetto. Is this the same thing?add
No, and that is the point. Saw palmetto on its own was tested twice at scale and failed both times. STEP ran 225 men for a full year at 320 mg and found it no better than placebo. CAMUS escalated 369 men to 960 mg - triple the usual dose - and placebo actually scored slightly better. Saw palmetto is still in this bottle at a full 300 mg, because it is harmless and men expect it. It is simply not what the formula leads on.
Why is there more saw palmetto than pygeum?add
Because each is dosed to what its own research used, not to make a marketing point. The saw palmetto studies ran near 320 mg; the pygeum studies ran 75 to 200 mg. Dosing pygeum higher than the trials would be inventing a number.
Is this the same as beta-sitosterol?add
Related, and worth knowing about. Beta-sitosterol has its own Cochrane review - 4 trials, 519 men - showing a 4.9-point improvement in symptom score and about 3.9 mL/s more peak flow. Phytosterols are exactly the fraction pygeum is standardized to, which is why this one is assayed at 3% rather than sold as milled bark.
How long before I know?add
The trials measured at 30 to 60 days. Take the full bottle before you decide. If you want a fair test, count your trips for three nights now and write the number down - most men are guessing.
Are there side effects?add
In the pygeum trials the reported effects were mainly mild gastrointestinal, and overall no more frequent than placebo. Do not exceed the recommended dose. If you take a prostate medication, a blood thinner, or you have had prostate surgery, speak to your doctor before starting anything.
Is it vegetarian?add
No. The capsule is gelatin. We would rather say so here than let you find out when it arrives.
